Former quarry situated in the heart of “Chemin des Dames”, strategic high places of World War I, the Cave of the Dragoon was transformed from 1915 by the German unities into true underground barracks constituted of military posts and places of life. From 1917, it was the scene of fierce fights. French and German lived together there for many weeks.
Site of tourism of memory visited right from the 1920’s, the Cave of the Dragoon was transformed into a museum in 1969 by the Souvenir Français. Maintained since 1995 by the Department of the Aisne, it has been refurbished since 1999 into a new building situated above the valley of the Aisne.
